Frequently Asked Questions Home What’s the teaching like? We teach positive, Bible-based solutions to life’s varied issues. We take the Bible very seriously, but not afraid to laugh.
Who is the Pastor? Phil Van Wart was born and raised in New York City, (don’t hold that against him), but a pastor in Maryland since 1979. Phil has a degree in Biblical Studies and thirty-four years of pastoral ministry experience, twenty-nine here in Maryland. Phil and his wife Nancy have two children, Matt and Corrie, and three grandchildren, Nathaniel, Ann and Maddy.
Where does the church meet? We now meet on our beautiful 40 acre Church Campus at 2450 Kings Landing Road in Huntingtown, on the left, just outside of Kings Landing Park. The campus is under development as we look forward to completion of our 5,000 square foot Multipurpose Building as well as installation of a more immediate 48’ x 60’ Modular Space.
Is your service traditional or more modern? We like to call it relevant and contemporary.
Is your music loud? Let’s just say you won’t be needing your hearing aid. Really, it’s not all that loud. The worship of our loving God is central to our Sunday Service. We are careful to be sure the music helps us experience the awesome reality of God’s power and person.
Do I have to dress up for your service? Please don’t - at least not on our account. We encourage casual dress. The worship team is comfortable on stage in casual dress and Pastor Phil can often be found on Sunday mornings in kakis and a sport shirt.
Will I be embarrassed or singled out in any way? Absolutely not. We believe God sends us guests (who else would - the devil?) so why would we do anything to scare guests away? You will be warmly and quietly greeted and simply encouraged to complete a Communication Card (if you want to) so we can forward information to you. You won’t be asked to wear a badge or be singled out in any other way.
Are you going to ask me for my money? Will that be cash, check, or credit? Just kidding. We do teach tithing and members agree to give generously. Guests are not asked to give.
How would I become a member? We offer a seminar entitled, “C.L.A.S.S. 101 - Discovering Church Membership.” It explains the membership process as well as provides for a well informed decision regarding church membership. The class is also a great way to just learn more about Calvert Community Church, its people and programs.
Does your church have a denominational affiliation? We were started as a joint effort of Grace Baptist Church of Camp Springs, MD, and Mission Mid-Atlantic, an association of churches throughout the mid-Atlantic region.
What if I have other questions? Email us. We’ll try to answer quickly. Or give Pastor Phil a call at 410-414-3700.
